Conservative Endodontics in Zografou
At Kelly Diamanti’s clinic
only endodontic treatment - commonly known as root canal therapy - is performed. The purpose of endodontic treatment is to preserve a tooth whose pulp (the inner tissue) has become infected or necrotic. During the procedure, the infected contents of the tooth are removed, after which the pulp chamber and the entire root canal system are thoroughly cleaned and finally filled with special biocompatible materials designed for this purpose.
The entire procedure is carried out under local anesthesia and aseptic conditions, using a rubber dam that isolates the tooth from the rest of the oral environment. The most modern equipment is used at every stage, including a microscope for magnification of the working field, as well as devices that ensure complete disinfection and sealing of the pulp chamber and root canals.
Depending on the initial condition of the pulp and other factors, the treatment may be completed in one or multiple visits.
When is Endodontic Treatment Needed
Endodontic treatment may be necessary when:
- there is intense and prolonged pain in a tooth
- there is sensitivity to cold and/or heat that persists, even when the responsible tooth cannot always be identified
- there is sensitivity during chewing
- there is swelling or inflammation of the gums, possibly with the presence of a fistula (pimple) that intermittently discharges pus
- there is an abscess
- the tooth has fractured or suffered trauma
Endodontic Retreatment
Although endodontic treatment has high success rates, in some cases retreatment may be required for various reasons. Retreatment follows the same stages as conventional endodontic therapy but is more complex, as all previous materials inside the tooth must be removed and the causes that led to the need for retreatment must be addressed.
Endodontic Treatment in Children
Endodontic treatment in permanent teeth is performed in children in the same way as in adults, with any special characteristics of developing teeth managed on a case-by-case basis using specific techniques and materials. Additionally, after careful evaluation, specialized treatment may also be performed on primary (baby) teeth that are inflamed or necrotic, in order to maintain them in a healthy condition until the permanent teeth erupt.
Stages of endodontic treatment
Dental Trauma
Dental trauma is a common and significant reason for endodontic treatment. It occurs more frequently in school-aged children but also in adults. Immediate management following trauma and prompt evaluation by an endodontist are crucial. These cases are often complex and require regular follow-up and timely management of potential complications. Information on the necessary immediate steps in case of dental trauma is available in the free mobile application IADT ToothSOS.
