Surgical endodontics
Surgical endodontics refers to the procedure of apicoectomy and retrograde root filling. It is a treatment option for selected cases where conservative approaches have failed, and surgical intervention is expected to prolong the life of the tooth. In these cases, after raising a surgical flap, the last few millimeters of the root (approximately 3 mm) are removed. The lesion - usually the cause of persistent symptoms - is eliminated, and a retrograde cavity is prepared inside the root using ultrasonic instruments. This cavity is then filled with special biocompatible materials. The flap is repositioned and sutured, with sutures removed after a few days.
Special conditions, such as external root resorption, may also require surgical intervention in addition to conservative endodontic treatment, in order to seal the communication that has formed between the root of the tooth and the surrounding bone.
When is surgical treatment needed?
Surgical treatment is necessary in cases such as:
- Tooth extractions that cannot be avoided
- Impacted teeth that have not erupted properly or cause pain
- Teeth with extensive damage
- Gum conditions that require surgical intervention
Each case is evaluated individually to determine the safest and most appropriate solution.

Procedures are carried out under local anesthesia and with modern techniques, ensuring that the patient does not feel pain during the process.
